The dampener (or balancer, as some call it, although I think dampener is more accurate) is there to dampen torsional vibrations that result from the normal combustion process, and have nothing to do with the manufacturing process.
And, yes, this board is full of haters. Get used to it. A large proportion of members on this board are well educated and more conservative in their opinions of aesthetics.
